Physical, Forever: Epoch’s Cassette Vision Stuck an Entire Console in A Cartridge
One of the weirder detours in the history of physical media.
Recent happenings have given the video games community a newfound appreciation for physical media. Although “physical” games these days generally amount to little more than software manufactured onto a disc or cartridge, the past 50 years have seen some wildly adventurous experiments play out through physical media.
One of the wildest dates back to 1981, when a toy and games company called Epoch began selling Japan’s first-ever hit console: The Cassette Vision. “Cassette,” of course, meaning “cartridge” here. In the Cassette Vision’s case, those carts really did look like cassettes, being about the size and shape of a Hi-8 tape and even shipping in the same sturdy plastic cases. (Don’t know what Hi-8 is? Ask your parents. Or maybe grandparents.) The console sold nearly half a million units, even though Epoch only made about a dozen games for it. (You can read more about them in The NES Era: Vol. I!)
Physical media advocates like to talk about how discs and carts let you do things that would be impossible through purely digital means, like resell games and not have to worry about delistings. They’re not wrong, but these days discs and cartridges mostly amount to an alternative to digital. They come with their own drawbacks and benefits, which individuals can weigh against the strengths and weaknesses of digital distribution. Choice is good!
In the Cassette Vision’s case, though, the system’s physical format genuinely wasn’t something that could have been duplicated digitally. Even if download-based distribution had existed at a consumer level in 1981 (it didn’t), no modem could have recreated a Cassette Vision cartridge’s capabilities. That’s not because the Cassette Vision’s carts had huge, capacious data capacity, mind you. It’s because each cartridge contained the actual functional components of the console itself.

But what about the Cassette Vision hardware, you may ask? Was it not a console? It was! It connected to a television and let you play different games based on which cartridge you plugged into it: the very definition of a console. But these were still the early days of video games, and the definitions of what video gaming meant were all still a little fuzzy. The Cassette Vision hardware base unit only contained about half of the components we expect from modern consoles. It had a video system and could output a signal to a television. It had an A/C adapter and could plug into a power outlet. And it had a variety of control options and switches built right into the system, allowing players to interact with games.
The Cassette Vision did not, however, contain a CPU or RAM. The console amounted to little more than a shell to bring together power, video, and a player interface. It didn’t contain the actual computer elements that run a video game. No code, no memory, and somehow no processor, either. Instead, all of those things were contained in each cartridge. Without a cartridge, the Cassette Vision is even more useless than a modern console with physical media. At least Switch and PS5 allow you to futz around with a user interface, even if you don’t have any games loaded or inserted. All a bare Cassette Vision could do was waste electricity when you switched its power on. The entire console—game code and processing hardware—actually existed inside the cartridges.
Baffling as this arrangement might seem, Cassette Vision wasn’t the first system to make use of an arrangement like that. Milton Bradley did it two years earlier with the Microvision handheld. And Epoch’s approach makes sense from a historical perspective. The Cassette Vision may have been their first “programmable” console, but Epoch had already scored some significant hits with dedicated consoles in the late 1970s. Their lanky Electrotennis machine had been Japan’s first Pong clone and actually shipped to stores slightly ahead of Atari Inc.’s Home Pong in 1975 (albeit exclusively in Japan). And Epoch scored a massive hit with their dedicated Pro Yakyuu (baseball) console a couple of years later, which they followed up with a machine called TV Vader that (loosely) cloned arcade megahit Space Invaders.

By the time the 1980s rolled in, though, Epoch could see the writing on the wall for dedicated, fixed-content consoles. Atari 2600 and Intellivision had become huge hits in the U.S., and although those systems bombed in Japan due to high import costs (Epoch themselves having attempted to distribute the 2600 and toy giant Bandai having wrangled Japanese rights to Intellivision), anyone could see that “programmable” consoles with interchangeable carts were the future. Rather than trying to reinvent the wheel, though, Epoch decided to work with what it knew already: it adapted the innards of its dedicated consoles into cartridges. Since a significant amount of the cost of a dedicated console came from its mechanical components, the plastic shell, and the distribution and warehousing of such large objects, shrinking the guts of those machines into a cartridge shell would result, perhaps counterintuitively, in a very cost-efficient setup. The computer components contained in each cartridge were inexpensive to manufacture at scale, and slapping them into small, standardized shells made for cheap production and distribution—savings that Epoch could pass along to consumers.
Nintendo and Sega would make Cassette Vision obsolete a couple of years later when they entered the console race with their Famicom and SG-1000 systems, respectively. Those consoles made the hardware philosophy of “sticking the computer bits in the console and using the media for game code distribution” (the one that we know and love today) as much a standard for Japan as it had become in America. Sure, the NES depended heavily on co-processors and other features embedded into its cartridges, but the heavy lifting was always done on the console itself. Since Cassette Vision never saw export outside of Japan, its cartridge format remains little more than a footnote in history. But what a weird and interesting footnote! And one that reinforces the impressive versatility of physical media.
