Sonic X Shadow Generations Update: Back to the Drawing Board... again?
In this episode: the review process is working as intended
As promised, we have a significant update for you this week on the Sonic X Shadow Generations statute. We gave a thumbs-up to the initial (re)design of the statue a few weeks ago. Right on schedule, the painted physical sample has arrived at the Limited Run Games offices.
We’d like to say that all systems are go and that the project is OK to move on to the next step, but instead we have a sterling example of why producing a collectible like this can be so time-consuming and demands an eagle-eyed review process at every step of the way. The new statue looks great, but there are still a few minor issues that we need to iron out before we can send the sample along for the approval of the folks who have the final say on all things Sonic (that is, Sega).
Specifically, the paint needs a little more fine-tuning. As you can see, some minor details look slightly off. The shape, color, and size of Sonic and Shadow’s eyes seem slightly off-model, and the sculpt should include some low-relief facial elements to help give the paint more dimension. At the same time, the thin line of Shadow’s mouth is a little too pronounced and needs slightly less paint to capture the correct look.

The Dreamcast base also doesn’t quite look correct. Some of the elements are the wrong shade of grey (most notably the triangle that extends the console’s power light), and the Sega logo is slightly off-model.

These are small details, but they’re the sort of thing that Sonic and Sega fans will notice right away. Thankfully, they’re also very easy issues to address. It’s not at all uncommon for a product like this to undergo a few rounds of fine-tuning before the manufacturing process lines up with the original vision. And the most complicated component of the redesign—the retooled molds—seem to be a big success. They look spot-on!
So, we’ve kicked the Sonic and Shadow statue back over to our partners to give it another go and fine-tune the elements that don’t look quite right. We should have a follow-up for you in a couple of weeks... please stay tuned!
