Our courageous blog team has descended into the dark, uncharted mines of the Limited Run Games warehouse in search of previously treasures to share with you, the beloved Limited Run Games fanbase. OK, it wasn’t really so much a descent as it was walking over to the Production offices to see which new items have arrived at the docks and passed muster at the quality assurance desk. Look, it’s pretty quiet around here. Let us have this one.
Williams Pinball Anthology Vol. I & II Box Set
First up this week is a pair of Switch games. A matching pair, as it were. You could have purchased Williams Pinball Anthology Vol. I & II separately, but who would do that? If you like some of these games, you almost certainly want to have access to all of them. And buying them as a set cost a single penny more than buying them individually and netted you this excellent slipcase, which is absolutely worth more than a penny. (Trust us, we’ve seen what it costs to manufacture a slipcase.) Seems like easy calculus. Why pass up this great set to save a penny? They don’t even mint pennies anymore!
River City Ball & Brawl Bundle
However, the main entrée this week... well, it’s another two-game set in a slipcase. This one represents an even easier choice, though. A real slam dunk, as it were. The River City Ball & Brawl Bundle from Retro-Bit includes two games—River City Basketball and River City Fighting Legend—in their entirety. And if you bought them together, you’d not only get a fresh custom slipcase to keep them in, you’d also save 10 bucks off the price of buying them individually. (Well, $9.99, but who’s counting?)
As with so many other modern River City games, River City Basketball debuted on Nintendo’s Famicom back in the 8-bit days and failed to make its way to the U.S. They could have gotten a jump on Arch Rivals and NBA Jam! But no. As usual, we (the poor, beleaguered American game nerds) had to pay the price for their lack of vision.
Well, at least Retro-Bit has made a real effort to put things right here. This licensed NES cartridge comes in a white shell housed inside a super durable outerbox that also contains a thick manual and a special acrylic display stand that lets you show off the cart on your shelf or desk with a couple of those iconic River City character sprites. There’s also a protective overlay sheet, and the interior of the box is printed with a basketball court diorama. Premium stuff!
Same deal for River City Fighting Legend. This groundbreaking fighting game (it featured four player action years before the likes of Power Stone!) only recently made its way to the U.S. despite debuting in Japan back in 1992. And Retro Bit has given it plenty of love here, with a great-looking and extremely well-constructed package. It may actually have been worth the wait!
