Once Upon a Time in River City
Good brawlers are my jam. I’m old enough to remember when walking to the right and punching things was a revolutionary idea in video games, and we’ve come a long, long way since the heady arcade zenith of belt-scrollers. The best brawlers oozed style, like Double Dragon’s weird post-apocalyptic mix of 50s biker gangs and 80s fashion, or Final Fight’s glossy, awesome sense of optimistic gangland mayhem—a world where a pro wrestler mayor taking justice into his own meaty hands almost makes sense. But it was on the NES, and even more so on the Famicom, that brawlers started developing substance that exceeded style.
Do Not Miss Castlevania Requiem. Just Don’t.
But every now and then, words like “best” and “perfect” are the most appropriate and accurate way to describe something. That is to say, there are classics, and there are classics, games that define and embody the art form.
Castlevania Requiem is two of the best video games ever made in one package. That’s a hyperbole hill I’m willing to die on. Rondo of Blood is a fine-tuned, gorgeous action-adventure. Symphony of the Night put the “vania” in “Metroidvania.”

Some video games are circular, introspective, winding paths of visionary storytelling, tapestries spun of nuance and subtlety. Others, especially many games inspired by the arcade tradition, are more direct in their approach to entertainment and narrative. Some days, you want all the delicate texture of The Unfinished Swan or the wit of The Stanley Parable. Sometimes, you come home from work and just want to walk to the right and kill things.
