Here’s 2026’s most Halloween-ready, variably spooky pixel art games
Filled with tricks and treats
Both games and movies have had a banner year for horror. Films like Obsession, Backrooms, and Resident Evil topped charts and pleased crowds, and games like Halloween, Silent Hill: Townfall, and Resident Evil: Requiem showed that AAA horror can come in all shapes and styles and still be effectively terrifying.
But the level of realistic violence and dread-inducing pacing in those games and movies may not make them the best fit for your average all-ages Halloween party. It’s a tricky holiday (pun intended) when it comes to balancing just the right tone between scary and silly, costumes and killings.
With that in mind, here’s a list of (mostly) less-realistic pixel art games from 2026 that are all potentially perfect to put on your TV or computer monitor and partake in some more palatable party horrors.

Mina the Hollower
It already seems like forever ago that Yacht Club Games triumphant return to the forefront of gaming launched to massive critical and commercial success. And all the praise and promotion was well deserved. Being a monster mash-up of top-down open world exploration and Castlevania-styled anthropomorphic animal action is already enough to make headlines. But it’s the execution here, with a densely packed map filled with secrets and side quests, and truly memorable moments hitting every 20 minutes or so, that make Mina the Hollower a modern Halloween classic.

Tenebris Somnia
From Mina the Hollower’s Tenebrous Isle we jump to Tenebris Somnia, a newly released point-and-click horror title that takes from classics in the genre like Super Lone Survivor and Neverending Nightmares, but with sudden, shocking live action cut scenes. The practical special effects here work a lot like the realistic box art of games from the 80s and 90s got specific about what their in-game iconographic pixel art characters symbolized. Shifting between interpretations of reality is also a perfect fit for the game’s narrative, which follows a young woman as she investigates the disappearance of her ex-boyfriend, who would go through any length to forget her.

Silver Pines
We don’t want to diminish all the things that Silver Pines does that are unique, but in order to get you in the door, it’s easiest to just say that it’s like a cross between the surreal noir setting of Twin Peaks and methodical 2D action exploration gameplay of like Flashback (except without the jumping). Or if that’s too 90s for you, you could call it a 2D Silent Hill. But whatever you do, don’t call it unoriginal, because once you dig into the details of what Silver Pines is really about, you’ll see that there’s nothing else quite like it.

Beatdown City Survivors
Another wholly original game from 2026 with a “like peanut butter and jelly” shorthand description is Beatdown City Survivors which, as you may have guessed, is essentially a marriage of Vampire Survivors and Treachery in Beatdown City. What that description doesn’t tell you is exactly how amusingly horrific the game gets. The original Beatdown City was mostly grounded in the realities of living in modern New York City, with gentrifying joggers, offensive drunks, and unglued cops making up many of the hostels. Beatdown City Survivors takes all those groups and dumps them in nuclear waste, makes them zombies, or otherwise “Troma-izes” them. There’s also less dialogue and more action in this semi-sequel to the original, making Beatdown City Survivors the perfect breezy, violent look into a hypothetical apocalyptic future.

Blood Dungeon
Blood Dungeon, the latest game from the creator of Nidhogg, also has some Survivor-like traits, though instead of taking things to the streets, it drops you in the ghost and goblin-laden depths of an ungodly pit. In fact, it’s possible that it takes place in a sort of intestinal afterlife, as the whole thing starts with your character being pooped out of the brick-butt of some bizarre ceiling. From there, you have to run, jump and shoot your way out of endless hordes of banshees, crabs, worms and mummies (to name a few). Probably the least scary game on this list, Blood Dungeon is also the most purely Halloween, with graphics that look like they were drawn by imaginative children planning their costumes for the year, and more tricks and treats than you can shake a flaming stick at.

Dark Scrolls
Doinksoft, the creators of Gato Roboto and Devolver Bootleg just up and launched this auto-scrolling 2D co-op action game a few months back, and unfortunately, not enough people took notice. They even changed their release date to make room for Mina the Hollower, as to avoid direct competition, and also, so the folks at Doinksoft could play Mina themselves without having to worry about launching a video game at the same time. And yet, Dark Scrolls didn’t get quite the press it should have, given that it’s packed with fantastic art, stressful-but-gleeful action, and more evil snowmen and tree trolls than you can shake a stick at. Designed from the ground up for co-op. It's the perfect “parent and child” team up experience, not unlike taking your kid out for Halloween and collecting treasures as you see the monstrous sights.

Love Eternal
Maybe the least Halloween-ish (Halloweenie?) game on this list, Love Eternal still belongs here, maybe most of all, because of its dual commitment to pixel art and psychological horror. There’s not much violence, but the feeling of danger is ever present. Most of it is about gravity flipping platforming, set in the ruins of an ancient, fallen world. But play for a few minutes and you’ll see that the running and jumping has been infused with copious body horror, psychosis, paranoia, and of course, bad PowerPoint presentations. That’s how Love Eternal infects and transforms one of the oldest, most innocent genres in gaming, and in doing so, takes it and makes it something entirely new.. If your brain, or controller, doesn’t break by the end of it, you’ll look back on Love Eternal with a freaky fondness that’s truly unforgettable.
