The Message is Clear: Limited Run Games Heads to SILENT HILL
A SILENT HILL side story receives a physical release at last.
What is SILENT HILL?
SILENT HILL is a video game series, of course. And not just games—SILENT HILL has grown into a genuine multimedia sensation, branching out into films and graphics novels.
Silent Hill is a place, too. A town in the American heartland, shrouded by fog, infested by frightful creatures that inspire fear and revulsion for their uncanny nature: almost human, but somehow far worse. Most SILENT HILL games take place within Silent Hill, but some don’t—SILENT HILL stories have taken place as far afield as rural Japan.
Sometimes SILENT HILL games revolve around the occult, but not always. In many cases, they revolve around middle-aged men like Harry Mason or James Sunderland, but they’re just as likely to center on young women instead. They frequently include an action component. Every once in a while, they’re all action. But, sometimes, they have no action.
SILENT HILL games arguably have just one thing in common: horror. And not simply horror in the Hollywood sense, but palpable, literary, psychological horror. Yes, there are mysterious phenomena and bizarre monsters and at times creepy cults, but at the end of the day the true horror in SILENT HILL comes from within. For all the freaky occult machinations and terrifying chases through walls of fog, the real terror in the town of Silent Hill reflects the fears, trauma, and guilt that haunt the protagonist. Victory in a SILENT HILL game has less to do with hitting some kind of hideous final boss with a rocket launcher until it explodes and more to do with learning to overcome inner turmoil. Those solutions do sometimes manifest as a hideous final boss, but inner peace is just as likely to come from a simple act or a personal resolution... if it comes at all.
Which brings us to SILENT HILL: The Short Message, an unconventional take on SILENT HILL that nevertheless feels entirely true to the themes and concepts that define SILENT HILL. Originally produced as a digital-only PlayStation 5® release, 2024’s SILENT HILL: The Short Message is coming to physical media via Limited Run Games as a DELUXE EDITION.
SILENT HILL: The Short Message tackles difficult themes. The game explores teenage bullying, jealously, and suicide in an era where social media platforms pressure people to use hollow euphemisms for such things (or avoid talking about them altogether) lest they suffer bans—or worse, demonetization. There is a real sense of danger to the game, especially as Anita finds herself pursued by ghastly creatures against which she has no real defense besides running away.
SILENT HILL: The Short Message presents a new take on the SILENT HILL universe in a way that feels fundamentally faithful to the franchise’s legacy. It’s available for preorder now through August 9 at Limited Run Games’ website.
