For so many people, Centipede is THE GAME that defines the Golden Age of Video Games. It was so popular it launched on 14 platforms, including Atari competitors like Intellivision, Game Boy, and the Commodore 64. Everyone had to have Centipede. In 1982 nearly 1.5 million Atari 2600 Centipede cartridges were sold. Forty years later Centipede is still making top 100 lists.
Millions have blasted bugs, mushrooms, spiders, fleas and scorpions. Few probably knew that they were playing as a wand-wielding forest sprite. Some players perfected the art of carving out just the right maze of mushrooms to make the advancing Centipede easier to hit. Others became masters of close-combat at the bottom of the screen. Everyone loved it.
