Haunted House is one of the first and most memorable horror video games. Released in 1982 on the Atari 2600 release, Haunted House challenges you to explore the many rooms of the large, dark mansion of the late Zachery Graves searching for three pieces of an urn. You have nine lives to find them all and escape from the house, but they're easy to lose because if you run into one of the many evil spirits, bats, or tarantulas in the house they will steal a life from you. Even the ghost of Mr. Graves himself will seek you out.
You can use a key to open doors, and scepter to ward off ghosts. But you can only hold one thing at a time, and that includes the urn! Only by lighting a match can you see the immediate space around you, and you will need to keep hitting the button on your joystick to light new matches. If your match goes out sooner than expected, be very afraid. That means a monster is nearby and has blown it out! When the match goes out, the only thing that glows on the screen are your eyes.
